Over the years, A24 has essentially become a seal of approval for film fans. If the American indie company has its name on a title, it’s probably worth seeking out.

This has become increasingly true for horror lovers, as they have put out some of the most acclaimed and notable efforts in the genre including Hereditary, The Witch, X, Midsommar, and Saint Maud.

On the other hand, their latest offering delves into the slasher sub-genre while also delivering plenty of big laughs.

Directed by Halina Reijn, Bodies Bodies Bodies tells the story of a party game gone wrong that leads to murder. With a group of rich friends gathered at a remote family mansion, a whodunnit shifts into place. But who is the killer in Bodies Bodies Bodies?

The Bodies Bodies Bodies ending reveals that there actually never was a killer. Rather, David wasn’t murdered.

He killed himself by accident. Casting our minds back to Greg showing off his unusual skills by opening a bottle of champagne with a sword, it turns out that David simply wanted to try out this trick for himself.

However, when he tried it, he failed to hit the neck of the bottle and instead fatally cut his own throat. Ultimately, the accident served as a way to allow the group to vent their true feelings and, ironically, the accident led to the real thing happening over the night.

The hysteria and paranoia that David’s accidental death brought out of everyone just led to more death.

Vanity Fair reports that there was a killer in the original script but the film’s director and screenwriter Sarah DeLappe instead decided that the string of deaths should be of the characters’ own making

“The core theme of the film is, ‘Is the killer outside of you, or is he inside of you? Are we beasts, or are we civilized?’” Halina explained. The point being made is that the fragile male ego was responsible for inflicting trauma and horror onto a circle of young women.

“It’s a metaphor of an old world. It’s a metaphor of a time that, hopefully, we’re still fighting to get that behind us” she added.

David was a way to take a critical look at “white, straight male toxicity and vanity, and the pressure on these old-fashioned men to be strong… The character that Pete Davidson plays stands for all of those toxic values.”
